Product Details

Bullseye! This circular disk is packed with 255 super - bright Dotstar LEDs. The DotStar RGB LED Disk features digitally - addressable LEDs on a white PCB. It comes with two pre - soldered 4 - pin JST - SM connectors, so it's ready to use right out of the box. These are the same integrated LEDs used in our fancy new DotStar strips. The 5050 (5mm x 5mm) SMD LED is a super - compact way to add multiple bright LEDs to your design. Unlike NeoPixels, this disk uses DotStar LEDs with a 2 - wire protocol. It's less timing - sensitive and has high - frequency PWM for super - smooth color blending. Like NeoPixels, DotStar LEDs are 5050 - sized with an embedded microcontroller inside. You can set each LED's color and brightness to 24 - bit color. Each LED acts as a shift register, passing color data along. By sending a long data string, you can control countless LEDs. The built - in PWM in each LED chip means you can set the color and then let it do the rest. DotStars have a high 20 KHz PWM rate. You only need to set the 24 - bit color data once for each pixel LED. The LED and its built - in chip handle the PWM of red, green, and blue. NeoPixels have a 400 Hz PWM rate, which shows some pixelation at lower brightness or when moving. With DotStars, even when you move the disk, the color blending is smooth. You'll need a 5V 10A power supply to fully light up this disk. We have a tutorial on wiring, power usage calculations, and example code. Check it out! Note: Shipping weight follows UPS' new dimensional weight regulations.

Using this DotStar RGB LED Disk is a breeze. First, make sure you have a 5V 10A power supply because it takes a lot of power to fully light up the disk. Once you've got the power sorted, you can start wiring. The disk comes with two pre - soldered 4 - pin JST - SM connectors, so you can connect it right away. You can set the color and brightness of each LED to 24 - bit color. Just send a long string of data to control the LEDs. There's no need to keep talking to the disk after setting the color because the built - in PWM in each LED chip will keep them glowing. As for maintenance, keep the disk clean and dry. Avoid dropping it or exposing it to extreme temperatures. If you have any questions about wiring, power usage, or using the disk, check out our tutorial. And remember, the shipping weight is calculated according to UPS' new dimensional weight regulations.
