Tired of rainbows? Now we have monochrome 'smart LEDs'! Create your own smart Cool White LED setup using the same integrated LED driver as our NeoPixel LED strips. Unlit, they look like yellow Starbursts. When lit, they're incredibly bright - it might even hurt your eyes! They can be controlled with 24-bit high-frequency PWM. The phosphor diffuses the 3 white dies inside for a bright and consistent light, better than mixing RGB for white. These 5050 (5mm x 5mm) SMD LEDs are easy to solder and a compact way to add multiple bright LEDs to your design. For prototyping, we recommend our 5050-size LED breakout PCBs. NeoPixel LEDs use an 800 KHz protocol and have a 400 Hz PWM rate. DotStars have a 20 KHz PWM rate for smoother blending when moving. NeoPixels are 5050-sized LEDs with an embedded microcontroller inside. You can set the brightness of each of the 3 cool white dies. Each LED acts as a shift register. Send a long data string to control as many LEDs as you want. The PWM is built into each LED-chip. Comes in a pack of 10 individual LEDs. We have a tutorial on wiring, power usage, and example code. Note that it talks about RGB, but this LED has three individual white LEDs.

Using these NeoPixel Cool White LEDs is easy. First, if you're prototyping, solder them onto our 5050-size LED breakout PCBs for a breadboard-friendly setup. Then, connect them according to the wiring in our tutorial. You can control the brightness of each of the three cool - white dies. Just send a long string of data to control as many LEDs as you need. When it comes to power usage, check our tutorial for calculations. Remember, these LEDs use an 800 KHz protocol, so specific timing is required. Since the PWM is built - in, once you set the brightness, you don't need to keep talking to the strip. As for maintenance, keep them away from excessive heat and moisture. And when moving them around, be aware that the 400 Hz PWM rate might cause some pixelation. If you want smoother movement, consider using DotStars instead.
