Product Details

The Adafruit NeoKey Breakout is an amazing product! What could be better than a mechanical key? One that can glow in any rainbow color! This 0.75' x 0.95' PCB can hold one Kailh CHOC or compatible switch, making it super easy to use with a breadboard or perfboard. It features a Kailh CHOC socket, so you can simply plug in a CHOC - compatible switch instead of soldering. A bit of glue might be needed to secure the switch. There's also a 1N4148 signal diode in series with the switch to prevent ghosted keys in key - grid matrices. Each breakout has a single reverse - mount NeoPixel that shines through the LED spot of many switches. You can chain these boards together as they have broken - out input and output for the NeoPixel. The board has flexible pin - outs including power, ground, NeoPixel input/output, and switch anode/cathode pins. It has two rows of 5 - pin contacts on a 0.1' grid on both sides for mechanical stability. Each order comes with an assembled PCB and a small stick of break - off header. Soldering is needed for breadboard use. Note that mechanical switches and key caps are not included, and Cherry/MX switches are not compatible with CHOC sockets.

Using this Adafruit NeoKey Breakout is quite straightforward. First, if you have a CHOC - compatible switch, plug it into the Kailh CHOC socket. You might want to use a little glue like hot glue or epoxy to keep the switch firmly in place. When it comes to wiring, connect the power pin (VDD) to 3 - 5VDC and the ground pin (GND) to the ground. To chain multiple boards, use the In and Out pins of the NeoPixel. For the switch, depending on whether you're using a pull - up or pull - down resistor, connect the anode and cathode pins accordingly. When soldering the 5 - pin contacts on both sides, make sure to do it for better mechanical stability. Remember, soldering is required to attach the break - off header for breadboard use. Keep in mind that this product doesn't come with a mechanical switch or key cap, and you can't use Cherry/MX switches with it. As for maintenance, keep the board clean and dry. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures or humidity. If you notice any loose connections, re - solder them carefully.
