Shape Memory metals, initially developed by NASA for the space industry, are now finding more uses on Earth. For instance, they're being explored in robotics to create very light robots. The NanoMuscle Rotary shape memory alloy actuators are tiny, silent, and super lightweight, weighing just 4.2 grams. They offer 60° of rotation. It uses a linear NM70-Super memory metal actuator in a body with a spring-loaded, cam-action rotary output. There are two versions: the 2-pin NM70R-2P and the 6-pin NM70R-6P. The -2P actuator 'bounces' between limit stops when powered, while the -6P gives you more control with end limit sensors and can be driven by the MADv5 (sold separately). Operating voltages range from about 3 - 9V. Check the Downloads page for more details. Applications include automotive (bi-directional grill louver, fuel tank door, trunk and glove compartment release mechanisms), consumer (memory card ejector, electronic latch release, security doors and locks, biometric sensor assist), and hobby/miscellaneous (grasping device, undersea core sampling robot, point of use sale items, latch release for ROVs, pneumatic actuator replacement). Specifications: 3 - 9V operating voltage, up to 60 degrees of rotation in either direction, better control with end limit sensors, just apply 3 - 6V at 350mA to turn the rotary, size 50x10x15mm (1.97x0.39x0.59'), weight 4.2g. Documents: NM70R(6P) Datasheet, Pinouts, Driving NM70R-6P with MAD-V5. Shipping list: One Memory Metal Actuator - NM70R(6P).

Using the NM70R(6P) actuator is quite simple. First, make sure you've got the right power source. The operating voltage is between 3 - 9V. For a basic turn, just apply 3 - 6V at 350mA. When using the -6P version, you can have more control thanks to the end limit sensors. You can drive it with the MADv5, but remember it's sold separately. As for applications, you can use it in your car for things like opening fuel tank doors or in consumer electronics for ejecting memory cards. When handling, be gentle as it's very lightweight at just 4.2 grams. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts. For maintenance, keep it clean and dry.
