Product Details

Get excited because making your own 8x16 LED matrix display for any Feather is a breeze! This kit combines two cute miniature LED matrices with a FeatherWing driver board. These 0.8 - inch square 8x8 matrices have all the features of a big LED matrix but in a smaller size. When you pair them up, you get 128 bright yellow - green LEDs in total. This is the Yellow - Green Adafruit 0.8 - inch 8x16 LED Matrix FeatherWing Display Combo Pack. We also offer combo packs in White, Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow. Usually, wiring 8x16 matrices would need 24 GPIO pins, which is too many. That's where this 16x8 LED matrix backpack PCB comes in. It has a HT16K33 I2C LED matrix driver that takes care of all the multiplexing work and is controlled via two I2C pins. It's easy to use and has a portable library that works on any of our Feathers to turn each LED on or off. The 16x8 backpack is great for making scrolling displays or small video displays. In our example, we used it to show small bitmap emoticons, but you can also display moving text, like a sign at a miniature car dealership. This kit includes a fully tested and assembled 16x8 0.8 - inch LED FeatherWing, 2 ultra - bright square 8x8 yellow - green matrices, and 2 16 - pin headers. You'll need to do a bit of soldering to attach the two matrices to the FeatherWing, but it's easy and only takes about 15 minutes. Check out our tutorial for assembly instructions, pinouts, CircuitPython and Arduino library code, schematics and more!

Using this Adafruit LED matrix kit is super easy. First, assemble the components. You'll need to solder the two 8x8 yellow - green matrices onto the FeatherWing. It only takes about 15 minutes. Once assembled, connect it to your Feather using the provided headers. You can use the portable library to control each LED. To display something, like emoticons or moving text, you can refer to our example code. As for maintenance, keep the kit in a dry place. Avoid getting it wet or exposing it to extreme temperatures. If you want to update the display content, just modify the code according to your needs. And don't forget to check our tutorial for more detailed instructions and troubleshooting tips.
